MOTORCYCLE TOUR ON THE UNPAVED ROAD IN SUSA VALLEY, PIEDMONT
This thrilling motorcycle tour will take you along the unpaved road to Finestre Pass Colle Delle Finestre and on the gravel road to Assietta Pass Colle dell'Assietta. You will start out from the Alpine Susa Valley (Val di Susa) located in Piedmont on the border between Italy and France where you can easily arrive from Turin by a highway or from France through the Montgenèvre Pass or the Mont Cenis Pass.
The road you have to take to reach Finestre Pass (Colle Delle Finestre) starts from the town of Susa, the capital of this Valley. It will climb up to Colletto di Meana on a paved road for the first 11 kilometers and then will continue on an unpaved road up to the pass 2,178 meters a.s.l. This last stretch of about 8 kilometers is rather challenging due to the surface of the road and the remarkable altitude differences of the slope. Although this road is not intended only for the great motocross experts, anyway, a good motorcycle riding experience is required here!
You will enjoy dramatic, incredible views over the valley below and on the spectacular peaks of the Alps around you. The surrounding environment is one of a typical Italian Alpine scenery where it is easy to spot many small animals like marmots that have found here their perfect habitat. Because of these little cute animals, for many years now the local authorities have been introduced a limitation of traffic on some days during the week.
After crossing the Finestre Pass, point your motorcycle to Vecchia Pass (Colle Della Vecchia) and then take the gravel road to Assietta Pass (Colle dell'Assietta). On this road, some gravel stretches might seem difficult to deal with anyway, they are considered of medium difficulty. This ascent road features 14 hairpin bends while taking you to Assietta Pass (Colle dell'Assietta) at 2,472 meters a.s.l. Along this road too, you will enjoy awesome panoramas over the Alps. Pay close attention to the small water drains that have dug crosswise the road, because if they faced not correctly and without due care, they can cause damages and falls.
Both roads mentioned before were built in the last century for military purposes and needs, so during your trip, you will find several military constructions mostly badly damaged still standing in order to remind us of the horrors of the Wars.
