NORTH TYROL: SCENIC ROADS THAT WILL TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY
On the tour North Tyrol: scenic roads that will take your breath away you can explore the Austrian Alpine region bordering Germany to the north, Italy to the south, and Liechtenstein to the west. It is an eldorado for motorcyclists where you will discover some of the most beautiful roads, where to ride a motorcycle, both for the thrilling hairpin bends but also for the scenographic views that open behind every bent.
This trip starts from the village of Bregenz, Austria, located on the shores of Lake Constance, Bodensee, in German, a few kilometers from the German border, and the beautiful Lindau island and ends up in Villach, Austria, just beyond the border between North Tyrol and Carinthia. From Bregenz, you will head south and ride your bike on the famous Silvretta High Alpine Road Silvretta Hochalpenstraße. This beautiful Alpine road crosses a breathtaking environment dominated by the peak of Piz Buin which reaches 3,312 meters above sea level. On this road, you will face with your two-wheeler 30 dramatic hairpin bends with suggestive views of Lake Vermuntsee before crossing Bielerhöhe Pass, 2,071 m.a.s.l., and reaching the large artificial lake Silvrettastausee. The panoramic winding stretch of the descent from Bielerhöhe Pass features two hairpin bends and lots of curves where you will have fun riding your motorbike!
Left behind Silvretta High Alpine Road and after about 20 more kilometers you will turn to the Kaunertal Glacier Road (Kaunertaler Gletscherstraße). This road with its 29 hairpin bends and 1,500 meters of difference in level, is considered among the most panoramic roads in North Tyrol. Through a wild environment, it leads to the foot of the impressive Weißseeferner glacier. You cannot cross the glacier so you have to go back to the way you arrived.
Once past Innsbruck you will explore the Zillertal High Road (Zillertaler Höhenstraße) and the Schlegeis Alpine Road (Schlegeis Alpenstraße). The first one goes through the majestic setting of the Zillertal Alps and reaches 2,020 m. above sea level. In addition to the stunning views, the Zillertal High Road is highly appreciated for its good food and characteristic places. The second one, the Schlegeis Alpine Road is about 13 km long with four tunnels dug out of the rock and eight hairpin bends and curves, so here too, you will enjoy riding your motorcycle! Do not miss a walk on the high and imposing wall of the Schlegeis dam. ( it is 131 m high and 725 m. long)
Some more pleasant kilometers riding your motorbike in North Tyrol and you will get to the junction where to take the road to Kitzbüheler Horn. It is a very scenic route with wide curves and really steep slopes. For cyclists getting on is a pain, while motorcyclists must pay attention to the delivery of the engine power. At the top, there is the Gasthof Alpenhaus with a large terrace where you can enjoy beautiful, scenic views of the Kitzbühel Alps and of the sinuous road below you have just ridden on.
Villach, the arrival point, is now getting closer, but meantime you will ride your motorcycle on two more very cool stretches in this last corner of North Tyrol: the Kalser Glockner Road (Kalser Glocknerstraße) and the Pustertaler Höhens Road (Pustertaler Höhenstraße). The first one offers seven winding kilometers with awesome views of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. This road will lead you to 1,920 m. above sea level to the Lucknerhaus refuge. The second one, the Pustertaler Höhens Road, is a spectacular mountain road with curves and bends offering breathtaking panoramas while riding a motorbike here.
