FROM MUNICH TO TRIESTE CROSSING THE ALPS AND THE DOLOMITES
On this spectacular motorcycle tour from Munich (Germany) to Trieste (Italy) crossing the high Alpine passes, you will enjoy beautiful landscapes and winding panoramic roads with endless bends and curves.
Leaving Munich and the Austrian Tyrol, you will enter Italy crossing Timmelsjoch (in Italian Passo del Rombo), a high alpine pass at 2,474 meters a.s.l. Every motorcyclist who likes winding roads will surely have great fun riding his bike here on the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road because of the many hairpin bends and curves. In addition, you will enjoy fantastic panoramas that open up when the high-altitude vegetation thins out allowing beautiful views over a large part of the South Tyrolean Alps. The Timmelsjoch Alpenstraße is a toll road and it is open from 7 in the morning until 20 in the evening. Pay attention to clothing: Timmelsjoch weather is feared for sudden changes that can cause sharp drops in temperature, even in summer.
Left behind Timmelsjoch you enter Italy where the climate is milder and the road you are following crosses the vineyards where the famous South Tyrolean wines come from. We recommend having a stop here and tasting the exquisite typical local cuisine accompanied by a glass of good red or white wine in one of the many restaurants spread in this area. Be careful not to overdo libations: in Italy, the alcohol limit is 0.5, (the same as in Germany), so a glass of wine is still allowed!
Passing by Bolzano, you enter the Dolomites, one of the most spectacular alpine areas in Italy. The Dolomites have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and they are a true paradise for all motorcyclists! So here you are now about to cross the most famous Dolomite passes including those four ones of the Sella Group Tour, (also known as Sellaronda) such as Sellapass, Gardenapass, Campolongopass, and Pordoipass. From the top of this last one, you can take a Cable Car to Sass Pordoi, a natural terrace at 2,950 meters a.s.l. where you will enjoy great panoramas that extend from the Dolomites to the Austrian Alps and to those of Switzerland.
From there, you will ride your motorcycle towards Giaupass, by many, it is considered to be the most spectacular one of all alpine passes, before arriving in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the famous ski resort also known as the "Pearl of the Dolomites".
Leaving the Dolomites behind, you will still find fun on the curves and bends of Sella di Razzo and Sella Campigotto road. A little further on you will ride on the "Panoramica delle Vette", an awesome road with great views (also a mythical route for the Italian motorcyclists!) that climbs steeply to Monte Crostis and Monte Zoncolan.
Now, this motorcycle tour will take you back to Austria crossing the Nassfeldpass and then heading towards Lake Faak, the Austrian town that hosts every autumn the "European Bike Week", the largest Haley Davidson meeting in Europe.
From Lake Faak only a few kilometers, and you enter Slovenia crossing the Vršic Pass. Then you have to take the road towards the Mangart, another spectacular road that offers breathtaking views at the top.
Left behind Mangart, keep on riding your motorcycle following the Italian river Isonzo and enjoying some suggestive natural attractions around, before reaching Trieste, the arrival point of this motorbike tour.
Tips: Since Venice is only 160 km away by a fast motorway, it could be an opportunity to visit it before going back home.
